Can mold cause health problems?

Molds have the potential to cause health problems. Molds produce allergens (substances that can cause allergic reactions), irritants, and in some cases, potentially toxic substances (mycotoxins). Inhaling or touching mold or mold spores may cause allergic reactions in sensitive individuals. Allergic responses include hay fever-type symptoms, such as sneezing, runny nose, red eyes, and skin rash (dermatitis).

Allergic reactions to mold are common. They can be immediate or delayed. Molds can also cause asthma attacks in people with asthma
who are allergic to mold. In addition, mold exposure can irritate the eyes, skin, nose, throat, and lungs of both mold-allergic and non-allergic people. [EPA MOLD GUIDE]

Signs You Have a Mold Problem at Home

Mold can cause respiratory issues if left untreated. The key is identifying a mold problem early to prevent structural damage and health problems. Below are five signs of mold growth in your home.

1. Visible Mold Growth

Mold can appear as black, green, or white patches or spots and is commonly found in kitchens, bathrooms, basements, windows, and areas with water damage. Even a tiny amount of mold should be removed so it doesn't spread mold spores and cause problems throughout your home.

2. Earthy or Musty Odors

Mold releases volatile organic compounds that produce a musty or rotting wood smell, depending on where it grows and the type. If a persistent musty smell lingers under carpets or walls, the culprit could be mold. Get a mold inspection so a professional can effectively address the problem.

3. Moisture Issues and/or Water Damage

Homeowners should address leaky pipes or roofs and high humidity levels to prevent mold that thrives in damp environments. Look for signs of moisture or hidden water leaks, such as discoloration, water stains, bubbling or peeling paint, dampness, and warped wood. Call NextGen immediately to address the problem and avoid mold-related health issues.

4. Allergic Reactions and Other Respiratory Problems

Mold can trigger allergic reactions and worsen respiratory problems. If your symptoms improve outside the home, the problem could be mold. Common symptoms to watch for include sneezing, asthma attacks, itchy or watery eyes, and allergies.

5. Unexplained Health Symptoms

Prolonged mold exposure can affect your overall health. You may experience other health issues such as fatigue, headaches, problems concentrating and dizziness. If multiple household members have similar symptoms, mold that’s affecting your indoor air quality could be the problem.

If you see visible mold or suspect a mold issue, contact the professionals at NextGen for an inspection. Our team can identify the type of mold and safely remove it with our proven mold remediation process. Homeowners must also address water leaks or moisture problems to prevent mold growth in the future.

Air Duct Mold Removal by NextGen

If you've noticed a musty smell coming from your vents, experienced unexplained respiratory symptoms at home, or seen black spots around your vents or ceiling, you might be dealing with one of the most serious indoor air quality issues a San Antonio homeowner can face. Mold inside your air ducts doesn't stay in the ducts, your HVAC system distributes mold spores to every room every time it runs.
NextGen has been cleaning mold from HVAC systems across San Antonio and Austin
since 2010.

Why San Antonio Homes Are Especially Vulnerable to Duct Mold

Mold needs three things to grow: moisture, organic material, and the right temperature. San Antonio provides all three in abundance. Our humidity levels, often 60–80% during summer months combine with cool, moistur air inside ductwork to create near perfect conditions for mold colonization. Older flex ducts are particularly susceptible
because their inner lining, often fibrous or porous provides the organic material mold needs to anchor itself.
Any home that has had water intrusion near the HVAC system, a leaking roof, a
condensate coil or drain overflow, a burst pipe, or high heat and humidity levels inside the attic without proper
insulation and attic fan ventilation is at elevated risk. The Texas ice storms of 2021 left many homes with
burst pipes and subsequent mold issues that are still being discovered in ductwork today.

Signs You Have Mold in Your Air Ducts

Musty or earthy odor from vents. The most distinctive sign of mold in ductwork is a persistent musty smell that's strongest when the HVAC system runs. If you have thoroughly cleaned your home but the smell persists, particularly from air vents, mold in the air ducts is the most likely culprit.

Visible dark growth around vent registers. Mold near or on supply registers is a clear indicator that contamination exists inside the duct system. Even a small visible colony at the register opening represents a much larger problem further inside the duct. Remember it does not start at the vent.

Chronic allergy symptoms at home. Mold spores are potent allergens. If household members experience sneezing, runny nose, itchy eyes, or worsening asthma primarily when indoors, and symptoms improve when outside or away from home, mold exposure through the HVAC system is a serious possibility.

High indoor humidity consistently above 60%. If your home consistently runs at high humidity, conditions inside your ducts are likely worse. We recommend maintaining indoor humidity between 35–50% year round. This is especially important during San Antonio or Austin summers.

Water damage or condensation in or near HVAC components. A condensate coil, a roof leak above your air handler, or any flooding near ductwork creates immediate mold risk. These situations warrant inspection within 48–72 hours. Mold can establish visible colonies within that window under Texas humidity conditions.

Our Mold Cleaning Process
Thorough inspection first. We assess your air ducts for visible signs. We identify the extent
before we give you any price or recommendations.

Full disclosure of what we find. We show you photos before we start. We explain what we are going to do and what it will cost. Nothing begins until you approved the scope and price. This is our standard approach, every time.

Cleaning of the spots, spraying and fogging. Our cleaning process removes the physical stains by wiping the surface, and if needed even  "washing" the ducts using special equipment.

Addressing the long term solution. Mold can returns if not thinking long term. We'll advise you on
correcting the underlying cause, whether that's a condensation issue, dirty system, ducts damaged, or a home humidity management problem.
After every cleaning we highly recommend installing UV Light Air Purification System, to ensure long term results and high indoor air quality.

When Air Duct Replacement Is the Right Answer
Some mold situations go beyond what cleaning and treatment can resolve. Severely contaminated flex duct, where mold has penetrated deeply into the fibrous inner lining cannot be adequately remediated. It needs to be replaced. Our air duct replacement service handles these cases, removing contaminated air ducts entirely and installing new, high quality duct systems. We'll honestly tell you when replacement is necessary versus when cleaning and treatment is sufficient and show you the evidence that supports the recommendation.

Mold Removal in Austin, TX
NextGen provides air duct mold removal throughout the greater Austin area. Central Texas's humidity and temperature patterns create similar mold risk conditions as San Antonio, and Austin's large stock of older homes means many properties have never had their air ducts inspected for mold.
